Here's Our 7-Step Guide For Tackling The NAPLAN
#TIP 1: Understand the test's structure and format
The NAPLAN test assesses your child's skills in reading, writing, and numeracy. It's not about studying specific subjects, but about understanding and applying literacy and numeracy skills. Take time to understand the test structure and the types of questions your child will face.
#TIP 2: Practice NAPLAN tests together!
Practicing for a NAPLAN test can be daunting! However, one of the most effective ways you can support your child is by using the official practice tests that are available to you. Your child doesn't have to answer all the questions, but at least skim through the sample test to get a feel for the different types of questions including the format of the multiple-choice, drag-and-drop and written sections of the actual paper. This will also allow you to identify any specific areas that need more attention which you can pass onto your child's tutor or teacher for additional support.
#TIP 3: Communicate with your child's teacher and tutor
Keeping an open line of communication with your child's teacher and tutor is also a great way to help your child prepare for the NAPLAN test. With their extensive experience with both the NAPLAN and your child, they'll be able to provide you with helpful insights so that you can work on building your child's skills outside of school and classes.
#TIP 4: Brainstorm topics for writing
In the Writing test of the NAPLAN, your child will have to write a response to a stimulus that tells a story, gives information, or tries to persuade. NAPLAN tests are notorious for asking students to write imaginative and persuasive writing styles so spend some time with your child to brainstorm ideas for writing in response to a broad topic such as 'Adventure' or 'Heroes'.
#TIP 5: Build a simple and consistent study habit
Consistent study and practice can greatly improve your child's performance on the NAPLAN. Develop a study schedule that allows your child to review and practice each subject area. Make sure the schedule is realistic and takes into account your child's other responsibilities and activities. However, remember to not stress out about the test!
#TIP 6: Get a good night's rest before test days
Keep in mind that your child may not be used to sitting tests with long durations such as with the NAPLAN. That being said, ensure that your child gets a good night's sleep before the test and eats a healthy breakfast in the morning. This can help them concentrate and perform their best.
