The most common PSMT mistakes in QCE Maths Methods aren't calculation errors. Understanding PSMTs: Why Maths Alone Isn't Enough


The PSMT is marked using the QCAA ISMG across four criteria. Only one of those criteria, Solve, is primarily about mathematical accuracy. The other three, Formulate, Evaluate and Communicate, assess your reasoning, your judgement and your ability to present a logically organised mathematical argument.


A student who produces technically correct calculations but doesn't justify their model choice, explain their technology output, evaluate their results critically or write a report that reads independently will lose marks across all four criteria at once. This is why students who feel they've "done the maths right" sometimes receive a result that doesn't match their expectation.



Things to Avoid in Your Maths Methods PSMT: A Section By Section Breakdown



1️⃣ Formulate Mistakes


  1. Listing assumptions without justifying them: This is the single most common mistake in the formulate section. Writing "it is assumed that the rate of growth is constant" tells the marker what you've assumed. It doesn't tell them why that assumption is reasonable or what mathematical effect it has.   2. Confusing observations with assumptions: An observation is something given in the task or collected from data. An assumption is a decision you make. Listing given data as an assumption, or treating your own modelling decisions as observations, suggests you don't understand the distinction.   3. Not defining variables, units and domains: If you introduce a variable x without stating what it represents, what unit it's measured in and what range of values it can take, your formulation is incomplete. The marker needs to be able to follow your report without the task sheet in front of them.

  4. Choosing a model without mathematical reasoning: Selecting a quadratic or exponential function because it "looks right" or because the R² value is high isn't a mathematical justification. You need to explain why the selected model is appropriate for the context, what mathematical behaviour it exhibits and why that behaviour matches the real-world situation being investigated. A high R² value alone doesn't prove the model is suitable.



2️⃣ Solve Mistakes


  • Including calculator or software output without explanation: Pasting a screenshot of a regression output, a graph or a table without explaining what it shows is one of the clearest ways to lose communication marks. Technology should support your solution, not replace your reasoning. Every piece of technology output needs to be interpreted in writing. What does the graph show? What does the equation mean in context? What did you use the output to determine?

  • Rounding values too early: Rounding intermediate values mid-calculation and then using those rounded values in subsequent steps introduces compounding error. Store full decimal values and round only the final answer, stating clearly what level of precision you've used and why.

  • Missing transitions between steps: Moving from one calculation to the next without explaining the connection is a common mistake that makes the solve section read like a list of disconnected equations. Each significant step should be accompanied by a sentence explaining what you did and why.

  • Hiding working in the appendix: Any reasoning or evidence that contributes to your marks must appear in the main body of the report. The appendix is for raw data and extended tables that aren't essential to your argument. If you move important working to the appendix to save space, the marker can't award marks for it even if it's mathematically correct.

  • Unlabelled or poorly presented graphs: Every graph needs a title, clearly labelled axes with units, an appropriate scale and any relevant features identified, such as intercepts, turning points or the range of valid values. A graph without labels is effectively uninterpretable to a marker who doesn't have the task sheet.

3️⃣ Evaluate Mistakes


  • Treating evaluation as a short final paragraph: The evaluate section isn't a summary. It's a critical assessment of how well your model works, where it falls short and what the results actually mean in the context of the original task. Students who write two or three sentences here are almost certainly not meeting the criteria at a high level.

  • Not referring back to assumptions and observations: Your evaluation needs to connect to what you wrote in the formulate section. Limitations should trace back to specific assumptions you made. If you assumed a linear relationship, your evaluation should ask whether that assumption held and what effect it had on the accuracy of your results. Limitations that can't be traced back to earlier decisions in the report are unlikely to earn full marks.

  • Generic strengths and limitations: Writing "a strength of this model is that it's accurate" or "a limitation is human error" tells the marker nothing meaningful. A strength should explain specifically what the model does well and why. A limitation should identify a genuine restriction on the model's applicability, explain its effect on the results and suggest a realistic improvement.   • Failing to verify results: Verification means checking that your solution is correct and reasonable using a method other than the one you used to find it. This might mean substituting values back into the original equation, comparing your model's predictions with observed data, or checking whether the result makes practical sense in the real-world context.

  • A conclusion that doesn't answer the original question: Your conclusion should directly address the question or purpose stated in your introduction. If the task asked you to determine the optimal fencing configuration, your conclusion should state what that configuration is and why. Don't restate your methodology or introduce new calculations in the conclusion.

  • Refining the model without explaining why: Model refinement should be driven by evidence, such as a residual plot that shows a pattern, a limitation you identified or a comparison between predicted and observed values. 4️⃣ Communicate Mistakes


  • Inconsistent notation and incorrect use of the equals sign: Using different variable names for the same quantity in different sections, writing equations that aren't balanced or using the equals sign to show a sequence of steps rather than mathematical equality are all communication errors that reduce the clarity and credibility of your report.

  • A report that can't be read independently: The marker should be able to read your report without referring to the task sheet. If your introduction doesn't explain the context and purpose, if your variables aren't defined, if your conclusion doesn't restate the question being answered, the report doesn't stand alone and communication marks are lost across every section.

  • Overloading the report with screenshots: A PSMT filled with calculator screenshots and minimal written reasoning doesn't demonstrate mathematical understanding. Screenshots are supporting evidence, not the argument itself. Every screenshot needs to be interpreted and connected to the broader solution.

If your initial model is genuinely appropriate and you can demonstrate that, forced refinement for the sake of satisfying the criteria won't earn marks. What matters is that any refinement you do include is explained and evidenced.
