NAPLAN Explained: Ultimate Parent Guide

What is the NAPLAN test?

The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy, more commonly known as NAPLAN, is a nationwide student assessment conducted annually across Australia for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It's typically held over three days, usually in the second week of May and is administered in all schools by classroom teachers, school deputies or principals.

What is the purpose of the test?

The purpose of NAPLAN is to evaluate students' abilities in key areas such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. The results provide valuable insights into a student's academic progress, serving as a diagnostic tool for both schools and parents. Additionally, some selective high schools use NAPLAN results as part of their admissions process.

Subjects and areas assessed

NAPLAN is broken up into four main areas conducted as individual tests covering:

  • Reading & Comprehension

  • Language Conventions (which includes spelling, grammar, and punctuation)

  • Numeracy (further broken up into calculator-allowed and non-calculator tests in Year 7 and 9)

  • Writing

Each of these areas is tested separately, allowing for a comprehensive overview of a student's knowledge of year-specific topics, application and problem-solving abilities.

Structure and format of the NAPLAN

In recent years, the NAPLAN test has gone digital and is conducted online using a variety of devices such as laptops and tablets. The actual format of the NAPLAN test also varies depending on the subject area. For most sections, students respond to multiple-choice questions which may be interactive and technology-enhanced using features such as drag-and-drop.

Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 will undertake their NAPLAN tests completely online. However, students in Year 3 will complete their Writing test on paper with all other tests online.

For more information about the official NAPLAN test, please visit the ACARA website for a full NAPLAN overview.
