Important - A subject doesn't scale well because it's inherently hard. It scales well because the students who choose it tend to perform strongly across their other subjects too. Choosing a subject purely for scaling without being able to perform in it can actually hurt your ATAR.
Which QCE Subjects Scale Well in 2026?
In Queensland, generally the subjects that attract the most academically competitive cohorts and therefore tend to scale upward include:

Subjects that typically scale downward include Essential English, Essential Mathematics and some Applied subjects. This doesn't mean those subjects are bad choices. It depends entirely on where you can perform best.

How Is Your Final ATAR Calculated?
Once your results are scaled, QTAC uses the following process to produce your ATAR.

Your best five eligible scaled results are selected. At least one must be an eligible English subject.
These five results are added together to form your overall academic aggregate.
Every eligible student in Queensland is ranked from highest to lowest based on their aggregate.
That ranking becomes your ATAR, reported as a number between 99.95 and 0.00.
Example - An ATAR of 80.00 means you performed better than 80% of the state's Year 12 age group, including students who did not complete Year 12 or who did not receive an ATAR.
