The external exam timetable above was designed to minimise clashes between subjects and ensure most students sit no more than two external assessments on any single day. Where a clash exists within a morning or afternoon session, students are allocated to the alternative session on the same day.
How Much Do QCE External Exams Count Towards Your Final Result?
This depends on the subject:
Year 12 Subject Type | External Exam Weighting |
QCE Mathematical Methods, QCE Specialist Mathematics, QCE General Mathematics | 60% (two papers combined) |
QCE Biology, QCE Chemistry, QCE Physics, QCE Psychology, QCE Earth and Environmental Science | 60% (two papers combined) |
QCE English, QCE Literature, QCE English and Literature Extension | 25% |
Most other General QCE subjects (Humanities, Business, Health etc.) | 25% |
For Maths and Science subjects specifically, the external exam is by far the most significant part of your result. Your three internal assessments (IA1, IA2 and IA3) together contribute only 40%. Getting your external exam preparation right matters enormously for these subjects.

📚 Preparing for your QCE external exams?
Our Year 12 QCE tutors work with students across senior subjects such as QCE General Maths, QCE Maths Methods, QCE Specialist Maths, QCE Biology, QCE Chemistry and QCE English. We help you understand exactly what the QCAA marking criteria reward so you walk into the exam confident. Your first lesson is completely free.
Just Getting Started With Year 12 Content?
If you're currently in Year 11 working through Units 1 and 2, the external exams are what you're working towards. Everything you cover in Year 11 feeds directly into your Year 12 performance and ultimately your external exam result. In Term 3 of Year 11, you'll also likely be starting Unit 3 content that will be directly assessed in your end-of-year external exam in Year 12.
The subjects where getting Year 11 foundations right matters most are:
📈 QCE Maths Methods: Units 1 and 2 algebra, functions and introduction to calculus are the foundation for everything in Units 3 and 4. Gaps here make Year 12 significantly harder
🧪 QCE Chemistry: Unit 1 and 2 chemistry concepts feed directly into the harder Unit 3 and 4 content including equilibrium, electrochemistry and organic chemistry
🧬 QCE Biology: Year 11 cell biology and genetics directly underpin Year 12 evolution, heredity and disease content
⚖️ QCE Physics: Year 11 mechanics and electricity are prerequisites for Year 12 electromagnetism, quantum physics and special relativity
Getting support in Year 11 is often more effective than trying to catch up in Year 12 when assessment pressure is highest. Get personalised content and assessment support with our Year 11 Maths Methods tutoring, Year 11 Biology tutoring and Year 11 Chemistry tutoring. Book in a trial lesson today.
Preparing for Your QCE External Exams?
With exams running from late October through to mid-November, Term 4 is the most critical study period of your QCE.
Here are the key preparation steps:
🗓️ Know your exact dates. Download the official QCAA 2026 external assessment timetable and mark every exam date in your calendar. Build your study schedule backwards from each exam date.
📑 Use QCAA past exam papers. Past papers are your best preparation resource and are available directly from QCAA's subject assessment pages. Do full papers under timed conditions rather than just reading through questions.
✏️ Read QCAA examiner reports. After each external exam, QCAA releases reports identifying exactly where students lost marks. These are freely available and are extremely valuable for understanding what the markers are actually looking for.
💡 Get tutoring support early. The students who perform best in QCE external exams typically don't start preparing in the week before. They've been consistently revising throughout Term 3 and using Term 4 to consolidate rather than catch up.
Our QCE tutors are available 7 days a week for Year 12 Maths Methods tutoring, Year 12 Biology tutoring, Year 12 Chemistry tutoring and ATAR tutoring across all senior subjects. Your first lesson is completely free with no lock-in contracts.
📑 Running out of time before your QCE external exams?
Our high-ATAR QCE tutors help you prioritise the right content and build the exam technique that translates to marks under pressure. First lesson is completely free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do QCE external exams count towards your final result?
Yes. For most General subjects the external assessment contributes 25% of your final subject result. For Mathematics subjects including Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics and General Mathematics and Science subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology the two external assessment papers together contribute 60% of your final result. This makes the external exam by far the most heavily weighted component in these subjects.
What happens if I miss a QCE external exam?
Missing a QCAA external assessment is a serious matter. If you miss an exam due to illness or another approved reason, you may be eligible to apply for an Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) outcome. You will need medical documentation and your school must submit the relevant paperwork to QCAA on your behalf. Contact your school's assessment coordinator as soon as possible if you believe you may need to miss an exam. For official information visit qcaa.qld.edu.au.
How long is the QCE English external exam?
The QCE English external exam runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes. English as an Additional Language also runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Literature runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes. English and Literature Extension is the longest English exam at 2 hours and 30 minutes. All English external exams are single paper assessments scheduled in either an AM or PM session.
Who writes the QCE external exams?
QCAA external assessments are written and marked by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, not by individual schools or teachers unlike internal assessments (IAs). This is why they're called external assessments. The exams are developed by teams of experienced educators and subject matter experts who work to the published QCAA syllabuses. They are marked centrally by trained QCAA assessors rather than by your school's teachers.
When do students find out their QCE results?
Year 12 students receive their final QCE results and ATAR in December 2026 after all external assessments have been marked and moderated. The exact release date is announced by QCAA closer to the end of the exam period. Results are accessible through the myQCE student portal.
